Carnations Roses

Carnations are also commonly referred to, all over the world, by their scientific name "Dianthus". The name was officially given to the flower by the Greek botanist Theopharastus.

The name 'Dianthus' was derived from two Greek words; "dios" which refers to the god Zeus and "anthos", which means flower. Carnations are thus considered "The Flowers of God". The single flower of the species Dianthus caryophyllus has five petals and varies from white to pink and even purple in color. Border Carnation cultivars are known to have beautiful double flowers with as many as forty petals!

When grown in gardens, carnation roses, a variety of the carnation flower, are known to grow anywhere between 6 and 8.5 cm in diameter. The petals of the carnation roses are generally clawed or serrated. Carnation roses are bisexual flowers and bloom simply or in a branched or forked cluster.

The stamens of the carnation roses can occur in one or two whorls, in equal number or twice the number of the petals. The Carnation is widely recognised as the birth flower for those born in the month of January.

In some cultures, like in France, the carnation symbolizes misfortune and bad luck. Interestingly, at the famous Oxford University carnations are traditionally worn to all examinations; white is sported for the first exam, pink for exams in between and the red variety for the fianl exam.

The history of the carnation flower dates back to ancient Greek and Roman times. The carnation roses are used extensively in art and décor. Christians believe that the first carnation bloomed on earth when Mary wept for Jesus as he carried the cross, symbolic of the sins of the world, to Mount Calvary.

Carnation roses in the early times were predominantly found in shades of pale pink and peach only. However, over the years the palette of available colors has grown. Carnation roses are known to be delicate, durable, and delightful flowers, all in one. The carnation is scientifically known as 'Dianthus caryophyllus' and is a historically rich and meaningful flower.

The carnation rose is one that has been revered for centuries, all over the world. It is also one of the world's oldest cultivated flowers and is widely appreciated for its ruffled appearance, clove-like scent, and extended blooming period. The carnation flower comes from a plant native to the East and is known to have been cultivated for the last two thousand years.

The dedicated market for carnation roses is gaining in popularity on account of the demand for the variety in color and size. The longevity and the unique look of the rose are other captivating features. To immortalize the flowers, there are a number of synthetic varieties being worked upon.
